Ben White’s England exile is expected to continue when Lee Carsley, the interim head coach, names his first senior squad on Thursday.
Carsley has been placed in temporary charge of the national team in the wake of Gareth Southgate’s resignation after the Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain and, while he will look to put his own stamp on things, there is unlikely to be a place for the Arsenal defender.
White, 26, went home during the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and reiterated he was unavailable for selection prior to the European Championship despite overtures from Southgate.
It is understood that there has been no change in that situation and so Carsley appears set to look elsewhere for the Nations League games against Republic of Ireland on September 7 and Finland three days later.
Carsley, 50, has stepped up from the under-21s and his spell in charge could be extended to six games depending on how the FA’s search for a successor to Southgate progresses. That would include two games in October and November and increase his own chances of landing the top job.
Jude Bellingham, the Real Madrid midfielder, is a confirmed absentee because of injury, along with the Manchester United left back Luke Shaw. Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite is also unlikely to be fit before the international break and the Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones is battling to prove his fitness for Sunday’s Premier League game against Manchester United.
Of those players Carsley could turn to, Newcastle United’s Tino Livramento, Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa will hope their early-season form is rewarded.
Noni Madueke, of Chelsea, Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott and Chelsea’s Levi Colwill are in a similar position.
Southgate dispensed with Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish, James Maddison, Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire for the Euros and they all face an anxious wait to see if they will return to the fold. Kieran Trippier, 33, who was dropped for the 2-1 final loss to Spain in Berlin by Southgate, could be at risk under the new regime.
